Research Grant Guidelines

CURRENT GUIDELINES

I.  General Information:

A. Faculty Research Grants were established to support research, creative work, and the professional development of MVSU faculty.

B. Grants may be up to $5,000 for one project. A committee will be created to approve all grants. The committee must balance the demands of a large number of meritorious proposals against a rather limited amount of available funds.

II. Research funds can be used for the following reasons:

A. Any research activity by a faculty member in which s/he acts as the primary investigator.

B. Purchase of reference books, supplies, and equipment not found on campus but necessary for carrying out the research project.

C. Travel to sites necessary for their research and relevant to obtaining data.

D. Stipends must be part of budget justification and no more than 35% of the grant can be received as a stipend.

III. Research funds cannot be used for the following reasons:

A. Any expenses related to the preparation or completion of a thesis or dissertation.

B. Student projects, particularly those involving academic credits, dissertation, and/or thesis research.

C. Grants will not ordinarily be made to fund attendance at professional conferences or publications unless the proposal demonstrates their relevance to the research project.

D. No funds can be used for the purchase of food.

IV. A complete application must include the following:

A. Completed and signed application form.

B. Proposal narrative answering the following questions.

1. What is the project intending to accomplish (objectives, significance)?

2. How does this project relate to current research in the area? How does it fall within the context of extant research/work in the area?

3. What methods will you use to obtain the project’s objective or answer the research question?

4. What activities are planned?

5. What outcomes do you expect? How will the results be disseminated?

6. What are the justifications for the amount of funds needed?  Include all items

necessary to complete the project including but not limited to travel, supplies, and equipment.

D. IRB approval  is needed if research involves human subjects.

V. Other criteria for consideration of proposals:

A. You should write your proposal so that it can be understood by someone outside of your discipline.

B. Your proposal must be clearly and convincingly articulated.

C. Project Narrative should not exceed 5 pages.

VI. Deadlines for submission

A. Applications for grant will be due on or before April 28, 2009.

B. No applications will be accepted after the stated deadline.

C. Funds for the grant must be used by September 1, 2009.

D. Faculty cannot use grant funds from a third party to complete the project.

VII. Responsibilities of faculty members receiving Faculty Research Grant:

A. Funds will be reallocated if the committee receives no acknowledgment within ten days of receiving approval.

B. Any publication resulting from the project must ackenowledge the support of the University, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Title III Part B Program and copies must be provided to The Teaching and Learning Center

C. An final report must be submitted to Faculty Development and signed by the Provost.

D. No further grants will be given if the researcher fails to submit an acceptable written report and budget by October 15, 2009.

E. Faculty who receive a research grant in the previous year are not eligible to apply during the following year.
